Every step in the pipeline happens on your phone. This page explains what the app actually does with your file, from the moment you open it to the moment you hear it.
Offline architecture
Local extraction, local synthesis.
Most voice readers upload your document to a server, convert it there, and stream the audio back. YapPDF does neither. There is no document endpoint to upload to — the app has no server component at all.
Runs on the device CPU
Because parsing and synthesis are local, the whole feature set works with the radio switched off. Airplane mode is a supported configuration, not a limitation.
Nothing is retained outside your file system
YapPDF reads the file you selected and keeps only what it needs to play that document. Your PDF stays where it already was.

You pick a file
Android's own document picker hands YapPDF a single file reference. The app never scans or browses your storage.

Text is extracted on the phone
A local parser walks the PDF page by page and pulls out the text layer, preserving reading order across columns and paragraphs.

Sentences are queued
Extracted text is split into sentences and held in memory so playback, highlighting, and skipping stay in sync.

Your phone speaks
Each sentence is handed to the Android speech engine (TTS), which synthesizes audio locally. No network request is made.

Whole words, natural pacing
Synthesizers fail loudly on abbreviations and symbols — they start spelling letters one by one. YapPDF normalises common patterns before speaking so acronyms, numbers, and citations come out as words you recognise.

Clarity is not about raw volume — it is about rhythm. YapPDF speaks in complete phrases with steady pacing, which is the difference between following a chapter and fighting it.
Speed is pitch-preserved. At 2x the voice speaks faster without shifting into a high register, so accelerated sessions stay comfortable instead of comical.
